STRENGTH CAMP is dead :(

A few weeks ago I told you the story about how I was
attacked by a pit bull while training at my gym.

That same night I had a dream where a tremendous whirlwind
came passing though. It was so strong that it picked up cars,
trucks & trees and threw them around in the streets.

During the whirlwind I remanded safe by huddling under a
grand piano and holding onto it’s legs for dear life!

I believe that my dream was a message to warn me of the
impending “whirlwind” of events that I was about to experience.

Also, the strength and stability of the piano that I huddled under
for security represented how the firm commitment to my “art of
strength” would prove to be my savior.

Over the next few days I will recount the whirlwind of events that
has forced my to close Strength Camp, my gym for almost 5 years,
last week.

This sounds like it may be bad news… but the truth is that it has
become the best decision I could have ever made. (I’ll tell you why
later this week.)

For those of you who have been following my story from training
people in the park out of my 1988 Ford Van – to – opening Strength
Camp gym – to – today… you may remember some of the following
things.

MEMORY LANE:

This is where the idea for Strength Camp all began:
Zach Even-Esh’s Underground Strength Manual

It’s been almost 5 years since I broke away from the corporate
world and followed my dream of “building stronger boys and men”.

My first step was to get my hands on as many free or home made
training tools and design a system for training my clients with in
this minimalist structure. Zach’s program was my blueprint.

I used this blue print to build a business of training athletes in the
city parks out of the back of my van. We all got VERY strong, built
serious muscle mass and developed a new hardcore outlook on
training, business and life. (Thank you Zach!)

Only a few short years later my minimalist training boot camps
became Strength Camp, my warehouse gym that you’ve all come to
love so much.

Tomorrow I will show you how I used this small garage in the
middle of the WORST part of my city to build a small strength
training empire.

Growing Stronger ONLY Happens Through Pain,
Elliott “The Incredible” Hulse

PS – If you are one of my fellow Strength Geeks, you have strong
love for this type of training…. it not only builds lean, functional
muscle, it also shatters the shell of inhibition and releases the real man
in you!

“Muscle Building Crack”

It’s a sick, sad and ugly fact that we have to admit…

Many of us, myself included, are simply addicted to
strength training.

If you’re like me, you first “hit the pipe” when you were
just a teenager.

Then, over time the addiction got worse.

In the beginning you could get a good high from just two
or three workouts a week.

Then you needed to hit the gym at least once a day.

A few months later you found yourself in a high school
gymnasium at 8pm sitting in a circle with ten other adults,
each of you taking turns to stand up and say…

“Hi, my name is Elliott… and I’m addicted to training.”

Hahaha! Sure, its funny… sounds like a joke for now.

But when you realize that yourself or your clients are
physiologically overloaded from too much training
coupled with other lifestyle stresses, it gets ugly!

Amongst other weird and depressing stuff you or your
clients will begin to experience a severe drop in anabolic
hormones.

And we all know how devastating that could be on your
strength gains, energy and sex drive!

That is why I teach all of my STRENGTHOLOGY students
to assess their client’s Physiological Load before designing
high intensity training programs.

In Module #2 I teach my students what the most common
forms of physiological load are, and how to discover the level
of load you or your clients are holding, with a comprehensive
questionnaire.

Its with this and dozens of other tools that STRENGTHOLOGY
Students and Coaches
set out to support themselves and clients
in becoming the Strongest Version Of Themselves.

We go far deeper than just “what exercises are best for firmer
thighs”…

We assess and design programs that reach into the core of who
our clients are and the absolute best way to make them stronger!

For the next four days only I will be taking new students into our
program.

You can register here:
http://growstrongerproductions.com/spd/superior-program

After asking for some feedback from my current students I was
shocked to hear things like:

“Its def. the most in depth and actually useable info I’ve invested
in period. Tons of info and the best educational product I’ve been
a part of to this day…” – Lou Torres

What do YOU want and what are YOU willing to do?

Grow Stronger,

Elliot Hulse

Sean Croxton: Dark Side Of Fat Loss

It’s been said that there are three types of people you’ll encounter on your life’s
journey.

1. The Crystal Ball - this is a person who “tells you your future”. Basically
when you meet this person they will be a reflection of who you will become
if you keep doing the things you’re doing.

Sometimes this is good and sometimes this is bad.

2. The Angel - this is a person who shows up unexpectedly and helps or inspire
you to take your life in a brand new direction.

This also can be good or bad.

3. The Mirror - this is a person who reflects the type of person that you really are
on the inside.

They will either show you what your best qualities are, or expose your worst
qualities to you.

The person who shows you your worst qualities will make you feel
uncomfortable. You will say, “I just don’t like that guy… I’m not sure why, but
I just don’t”

The person who shows you your best qualities will make you feel inspired to
continue doing the things that you are doing, and you will secretly admire that
person for who they are.

For me Sean Croxton is a mirror. (I’ll introduce you in a minute)

He reminds me of myself in may ways, AND I also aspire to be more like him.

Sean and I both love health, strength and fitness and have made it our personal
missions to serve others with our ideas and information in an entertaining way.

Here is what I admire about Sean…

In Chinese medicine and philosophy, the passionate, emotional, wild and untamed
mind is like an Ape.

Very strong, crazy and aggressive but totally unfocused in his approach.

On the flip side… the calm, focused and controlled mind is like a Horse.

It is powerful, yet very focused and manageable.

In many ways I tend to be more like and ape. I act on impulse and passion while
taking very little time to think things through. I just act!

Through meditation and cultivation I am working on becoming more “horse-like.”

On the other hand, Sean is more like a Horse.

He takes his time, focuses on his objective and waits for the right time to act.

And that is why I not only see Sean as a mirror, but I also admire him.

It has taken Sean several years to complete what is quickly becoming
The Go-To Manifesto On Health And Strength!

The Ape in me takes five days to compile my ideas and make them available,
often riddled with spelling errors, and my videos are NEVER rehearsed.

Sean “The Horse” has taken his time and interviewed dozens of experts and has
conducted years of research to create a manual that sits on my desktop as one of
my favorite fitness references.

Here is a video of Sean talking about what he calls “The Dark Side”.

If you are like me and love the topics that Sean introduces in the video, then
by all means INVEST in his new “Dark Side” book.

I know you will be very, very pleased (and enlightened).

Here is the link: http://www.hulsestrength.com/recommends/dark-side

Keep Growing Stronger & Smarter,
Elliott “The Incredible” Hulse

PS – Tomorrow I’m going to share an interview that Sean conducted with another
man who I admire greatly.

See ya then!

Strongman Training Journal part 2

money_treeBeyond God and politics… no other conversation makes people as uncomfortable as of that about MONEY!

Last week I revealed one of my most pressing goals, which is to spend less time working and more time with my family.  Also, I have to make it clear that time spent with my family doesn’t simply mean “hanging around” or doing “fun things”… in my definition it means Teaching Values, Modeling Behavior, Cultivating Discipline and Encouraging Harmony within my “Tribe”.

Colleen and I have 3 daughters and another child on the way… so, we’ve got quite a relational dynamic as well an opportunity for personal growth and evolution for all “Tribe Members” with our 4 walls.

So, in order to fulfill my ideal of spending more time with my family, as well as exercising my position as “Spiritual Leader” in the home…  I not only need extra time to be with my loved ones, but I need time to learn and grow myself.  For I am only as good to others as I am to myself.

If you are anything like me, you’ve come to realize that TIME is our most limited and valuable resource.  Why then, do we waste so much time doing things we’d rather not do?  Why don’t we sit down and consider what we’d REALLY like to do with our time and then formulate a lifestyle to support it?

Second to the fact that most people either a) have no idea what they want, or  b) are to afraid to approach it… is that we understand that without adequate resources (MONEY) it becomes very difficult to enjoy time fulfilling our hearts desire.  Also, as ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ illustrates, a man’s perceived safety and security must be established prior to become fully self actualized and worthy of expressing unconditional love.

In the mind of modern, industrialized men… money creates safety and security.  Although many, including myself, would argue that true security is internalized through harmony with our Creator… it is difficult to argue that “all is well” when your bank statement contains several penalties labeled “NSF” (that’s for Non Sufficient Funds, for those of you who have never seen this).

The goal of capturing more free time to pursue my “heart’s calling” is a noble one, and one that most would agree is ideal.  We ALL want more time.  And we ALL want more money, safety and security in order to make constructive use of our time.

family

So, how can it be done?

Simple, Spend less time working and make more money!

Sure, this sounds like a late-night infomercial that most would simply ignore as the navigate towards ‘TV Land’ for old Cosby Show reruns.  But, I am crazy (and some might say naive) enough to believe that I can do it.

Before I proceed, let me remind you of my current situation:

1. We are currently in the process of repaying over $87,000 in credit card debt.

2. We are “upside-down” on our mortgage and are about to have the banks foreclose on our home.

3. My wife drives a used mini van that we purchased on Craigslist.com after Simone (or 3rd child) was born.  Prior to this she drove the 2 older girls around in a Ford Escort that my grandmother gave us.

4. Of course, I still drive the 1988 van that my dad gave me 5 years ago.

5. Colleen and I do not spend money on new clothes, jewelry, electronics (our children watch the 26″ TV that I bought in college) although we do go on 2 date-nights per month where we spend about $100 for dinner.  I love good food :)

The point is that I am not, by standard definitions, rich.  I have created MANY financial challenges for our family that we are still overcoming.

Also, I have tried and failed at several business models that have cost me lots of time and resources.  But, it has been those “failures” that have given me the insight to create a model that is now working on several levels.  It is giving me more time to fulfill my God-given purposes and hearts desires (like sharing this journal with you) as well as the money to fulfill my fiscal responsibilities as a business owner, father, husband and leader of my tribe.

**A Note To Employees** – I realize that most people reading this are probably not entrepreneurs or business owners (heck, I don’t even know if I’d consider myself a REAL business owner) and may be thinking, “yea, this all sounds good to you lucky business owners who create your own schedules… but my boss will never consider letting me leave the office early!”

If you love your job and are happy with the way you spend your time, then my hat goes off to you.  But, if you are miserable and feel that your time would be better spend doing something else… then I invite you to a) re-evaluate and re-state your TRUE VALUES; and b) get moving NOW towards creating an ideal life that facilitates the execution of your values.  If this means getting a different job or (as I often suggest) begin a LEVERAGE ABLE side project that has the potential to create enough revenue so as to allow time for self-actualization… then get crackin’.

The “Restored Power” Principles For Working Less & Earning More Money:

Before I tell you about the tools I’ve been using (more like practicing) to create more money in less time, lets make a few things clear.

First, I am not in pursuit of “riches”… in fact, I hate stuff!  I tend to be a minimalist of sorts and would rather spend my life in a criminal’s jail cell than to be made the prisoner of expensive consumer items that need protection and maintenance.   More TIME for Thinking, Learning and Serving — this is my desire.

Next, it is essential to decide upon the exact amount of money you’ll need in order to feel safe and secure enough to pursue higher level activities. Any income created beyond this is to be thought of as a bonus.  I aim to resist the tendency to become overly excited with the results, and then to endlessly reset the horizon… this will surely lead to discontent and is counter productive to Peace Of Mind.

My calculations bring me to a monthly income goal (I always think in terms of monthly cash flow) that will allow me to continue to pay off our debt in the rapid fashion that we have been for the past 16 months; pay all of our living expenses; pay all of my business expenses; save a percentage and give a percentage to our church (these 2 actually come first)… and of course a portion allocated to fun :)

1. The 80 / 20 Rule: Like most business owners I have become addicted to work.  Also, conditioning set in by my father has created in me a paradigm of “you’ve got to work, work, work, work!” I still harbor this sentiment but aim to break it this year.

The 80 /20 rule states that “80% of all results come from 20% of the performed activities.” This is an accepted idea by most high performing individuals… I didn’t make it up.  The 80/20 Rule is also called The Pareto Principle named after the scientist who first propounded it (for those of who would like to “Google it”)

After a careful 80/20 analysis of my business activities and results, I had come to the conclusion that there are only 3 activities that really create income for me.  My objective now it to focus mainly on those things while working… to the exclusion of all, less important, activities.

The essential point here is to be completely honest with yourself by choosing to do ONLY what you know will actively bring you closer to your goal.  AND then to focus on it with super intensity!

2. Parkinson’s Law: Parkinson’s Law dictates that a task will swell in perceived importance and complexity in relation to the time allotted for its completion. Basically, if you don’t set hard deadlines you’ll have a tendency to procrastinate and as you procrastinate the goal begins to look harder and harder to accomplish.

This is how I managed to begin spending extra time at home in the morning helping Colleen get the girls off to school and am able to train for strongman 3-4 times per week, can get home early to help bathe the girls and get them to bed, spend alone-time with my wife, read, meditate and pray… while running 2 “businesses”.

Because I have boiled my crucial actives down to only 3 things and FORCE myself to focus on them alone from 9am to 1pm, 5 days per week I am able to fulfill my other obligation and heart’s desires without anxiety.

3. A Leverage able  Business Model:

The last thing that has to be considered, is that when building a model that will create income, I had to consider it’s leverage-ability… it’s capacity to run without me sitting at the wheel.  There are 2 elements that allow my model to run without constant supervision.

1. I sell information.

2. I use the internet.

In the interest of not making this post any longer than it already is, I will spare you the details of my model.  But I have placed an image of its mind map for you to see below.  (Most people are visual learners and fare well using pictures to illustrate their goals and intentions)

In following posts I am going to tell you about my Mental Training Plan, Strongman Training Plan, Family Leadership Plans, Nutrition and Lifestyle Plans, Learning Goals, Spiritual Evolution Goals and much much more!

Suggested Reading ==> The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris , although it has a hokey name the content and ideas in this book are based on time tested truths.  Tim’s approach is very pragmatic and practical.

This is one of the few books that has shifted my thinking and life paradigm in a dramatic and positive manner and I HIGHLY suggest anyone interested in the topics discussed above read it.

Tampa Strongman Training Gym

Hey, if you still have you ass on the fence about opening your own Warehouse Gym, hopefully this article about a young dude who was sick and tired of  “thinking about it” while working at a job he hates.  Now, he’s got his own gym and spends his days doing what he loves most… training athletes and making money ;)

esc3

I can remember like it was yesterday being a fresh college graduate with dreams of stardom and grandeur. I had just gotten my CSCS and thought that I would have every athlete beating down my door to be able to train with me. So I picked up and moved from Gainesville down to Tampa to take a position with the University of South Florida as an intern in the strength & conditioning. This was the “break” I was looking for.

In order to make ends meet I got a job as a Personal Trainer at the Lifestyle Family Fitness. Everything was going as planned….so I thought!

A month into the “internship” all I learned was that much of the College Strength & Conditioning business was flooded with cronyism instead of knowledge. I was a glorified janitor that got to babysit athletes that had NO desire to get better. To top things off, the hard work I put into my clients at Lifestyle yielded more of a return for them than myself. I was discouraged, frustrated and an overall shell of the person that was so enthusiastic months before. I was on the verge of giving up on my dream when I found out about 2 individuals that would ultimately change my whole perspective on what was possible.

I remember googling “Tampa Strongman”. What I found was a website run by Strength Camp owner and professional stronesc1gman Elliott Hulse. The first article I read of his hit me like a Mack truck!

Much like Joe Defranco and Zach Even-Esh did with there warehouse gyms in New Jersey, Elliott accomplished with his Strength Camp in Florida. He was able to create a competitive, results oriented environment that ANY and EVERY serious athlete would travel hours (literally) to train at. And like Zach Even-Esh before him, he was kind enough to “pay it forward”, to help others realize the dream that he had realized by creating a blue print for those that had the stones to stick it to the corporate gym structure and go out on their own!

So with a rebirth of vigor and a fresh new idea, I vowed to create Tampa’s first, best, and ONLY warehouse gym that people from all over would recognize and dream about training at! I didn’t want to cut any corners, so I wanted to get the best in Powerlifting, Olympic Lifting and Strongman equipment in order to create strong, explosive, and scary athletes! For my Powerlifting gear, I went to THE AUTHORITY in Powerlifting, EliteFTS.com.

I focused on the basics, because lets face it, the basics are what build the foundation for a winning athlete. I loaded up on Texas Power Bars (without a doubt the most versatile, best constructed bars made) specialty bars, bands, chains, glute-ham raise, reverse hyper and of course, what should be the center piece of every serious gym, two Collegiate Power Racks (NO CURLS IN THE RACK!!!).

For strongman equipment, I took a different route. While purchasing my powerlifting equipment, I learned quickly that when you want the best, you have to PAY for the best. Not so for strongman equipment! This is where Elliott had a huge influence, literally saving me thousands of dollars!

You see, I had always believed in the power of implementing Strongman exercises into an athletes training program, esc5however always trained with others implements. It never crossed my mind that with a little leg work, any and all of the strongman implements that help build rock solid athletes, could be so simple to attain. Want a tire? They are free! How about a keg? Raid an unsuspecting fraternity house when they are too banged up to remember their name (or go to a local bar and pay the deposit on an empty shell). Sandbag? Use your brain on this one! You get the idea!

However the most important nugget of info I received was to find a good welder. This will save you time and money and is invaluable in the unfortunate circumstance that any of your equipment is damaged. So after taking the advice of Elliott, I managed to put together a healthy stable of Strongman equipment for next to nothing!

Now, with the gym in place, and my dream realized, the real work begins! I can honestly say without the inspiration and guidance of Elliott, I would be in a dead end, 9-5 job, complaining about having a case of the Monday’s and being that much closer to being the guy on youtube famous for stapling a TPS report to his Bosses forehead.

Take it from me…NOBODY deserves that life! So if I could offer anything in closing, I would tell you not to give up on what you love. With hard work and guidance, it is there for the taking!

Internet Marketing For Strength Coaches

strengthcoachmkt

When I started Strength Camp 3 years ago my mission was to “Support Hard Working Men and Athletes Worldwide in Achieving Their Sports and Fitness Goals”.

In order to do this knew that I’d have to learn how to use the internet to quickly move my message around the world.  So, I went to work studying Internet Marketing and stuff like… e mail list building, blogging, video creation, product development, search engine optimization, etc.

Today, I have learned juuuust enough about business building and marketing that I have decided to add “and to Support other Strength Coaches in Building the Business of Their Dreams.” — That’s why I created my Warehouse Gym Business Course ==> http://www.WarehouseGymBusiness.com

Below you will find a recent interview that I did with one of my Internet Marketing mentors all about Creating A Website, Using A Blog, Using YouTube, Creating Products, etc. as it relates to Strength Coaches.

** Leave your questions and comments below the interview **

Elliott: All right. Hey guys, like I promised you, I have a special guest and a special gift for you this month. On the phone I have a gentleman who has been an integral part in my ability to create profit with my gym as well as online. I mean, he’s definitely one of the top marketers in our industry and any information that he has to provide you with, you’ve got to hold onto and utilize like your life depends on it – super important!

So if you haven’t heard of Craig Ballantyne, you’ll get an opportunity to meet him in a couple of minutes and what we’re going to do is, we’re just going to have a casual conversation and I’m going to ask him a few questions that pertain to some of the things that may be interesting to you guys and that have helped me get to where I am currently with our warehouse gym and online fitness business.

Now, real quick – if you want to learn more about Craig Ballantyne, obviously you can Google him or you can check out his program at www.onlinefitnessprofits.com.

Craig, I want to welcome you to the call and thank you so much for doing this.

Craig: Thanks, Elliott.

Elliott: Absolutely. Craig, now a lot of us know that you’ve done an incredible job as an online fitness professional promoting your Turbulence Training System, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that you started out as a personal trainer grinding away to earn a living like a lot of us. Can you tell us a little bit more about your experiences as a personal trainer and why you decided to take your business online?

Craig: Yeah, I mean, there was really nothing remarkable about what I was doing offline. Like you said, like most other trainers trying to do the independent contractor sort of thing – so some people at home, some people in small groups outside of a facility, and then people inside a small boutique facility. So that’s what I was doing there.
Then I was actually… I’ve been a trainer since 1994-ish, starting in university and working my way up and really, online, I’ve been doing that since ’99. So I mean, I’ve always been thinking about online. I’m a nerd so, you know, I like to read and write, and talk about things – but creative, too, so that’s kind of the thing that sets me apart from a lot of people is always coming up with new creative stuff. You know, nothing earth-shattering, but just a new way of presenting stuff that keeps people entertained. So I’ve been doing the online thing, you know – not financially online since ’99, but I didn’t really start selling anything till mid-2002 and then it was just through PayPal but I was doing an online email newsletter before I had even a website back in 1999.

So as soon as I saw that T-Nation site in ’98 or something, I was just like, “I can do this sort of thing.” I started writing my own stuff, and it was just trainers from my gym, people at school and clients that I had then, and just built that up. That was the CB Athletics website that is still up and still gets people to it, but I don’t put any new stuff on there. It was more of me kind of fun, figuring out what I wanted to do. Do I want to try and do athlete stuff? You know, I was training fewer and fewer athletes every year so I stopped writing about that stuff and really as I started to work with men’s health, then I really just kind of got into the busy person sort of thing.

Elliott:
You know, a lot of the guys that are listening to this call – the women and the guys – are currently personal trainers and they’ve got a passion for it. They really enjoy doing what they’re doing and they really may have not even considered using the internet to – number one, obviously market their services because you know that they are currently personal trainers. We do, as myself included, still train athletes and stuff, but why do you think it may be important for personal trainers and coaches to use the internet to market their services or even create products?

Craig: Well, I think the marketing of the service is really important simply because everybody is going to the internet now to find out stuff and to find the people to be their service providers. I mean, I’m talking about even people like my Mom who’s over 60 years old and not necessarily technologically inclined, but I mean, she goes to the internet to find out stuff now and I think that with the exception of word-of-mouth referrals, you know, one person talking to another, there’s nothing more powerful than the internet right now.

And there’s a million different ways of marketing online from the digital version of word-of-mouth which is stuff like Facebook, to actually having a website and even buying advertising which is definitely beyond the scope of this call. But you definitely need to have some type of presence on the internet and it’s quite simple to get started with the WordPress blogs. You can find someone to set one of those up and make it all fancy looking for about $200-$250.

So it’s quite cheap to get online and those people can make those sites look really nice and then you can just add content. I mean, no matter how technologically behind you are, in ten minutes someone can show you how to post your content on your blog – and it’s very simple – and then you just take your passion and put it on your blog, and you’re just going to start to attract a lot of people. It’s going to lead to a significant boost in your income. I mean, you’re not going to go from $50,000 to $150,000 overnight, but I bet within a couple of months you can definitely fill up any holes in your schedule plus – plus – the most important thing that I think a lot of trainers really want is you can start getting more of the clients that you really want to train. I know that a lot of people train, by necessity they train a lot of people who don’t fit their dream clients. And they turn out to be very nice people, but they’re not what you get up and get excited about. But with internet stuff, you’ll be able to attract more of those people that you just love to train.

Elliott:
That’s great. That’s actually one of the modules in our program – and the guys that are listening to this are familiar with that – is first of all, deciding who your market is – and it’s got to be people that you enjoy – and then positioning your message to reach them and the internet’s absolutely the greatest way to do that.
Craig, do you think it’s important for, again, just personal trainers and strength and conditioning coaches, guys who are training day in and day out but love it, to create an information product, you know, like an eBook or a DVD or anything like that?

Craig: That’s a good question and I would say that it really depends on what you want to do. I would also say it depends on what you already know. It depends on how much time you have to commit to various things and whether or not it really is your passion to go that route. I mean, some people kind of try and force something in there because they are just told over and over again that you have to do this.

But you don’t have to do it if it’s not something that you want to do. If you would rather create, say for example, create a certification based on your training, then that’s kind of an information product but it’s not like you have to have an eBook or something. But if you have some specific knowledge that you could easily put down into DVD – like say, for example, I’m thinking of Joe DeFranco’s stuff, you know, of how to master the 40 or how to stay better at combine testing, that type of stuff – then you know, maybe you do have something that should be in an information product. But it’s not mandatory.

Again, people can make big money; you know six figures net income, with one, two, three locations of their training facility. There’s a whole bunch of ways that you can prosper, and so I would definitely think about what you like to do and also whether or not you have the time to do some of this stuff. If you’re really focused on building out your locations, then maybe it’s not a good idea to try and jam in an information product into that as well.

Elliott: Could possibly, like a book or an eBook or something like a DVD help add to, you know, our credibility or actually bring people into our facilities because they see that we have something out there that adds credibility? Like, an information product?

Craig:
I would say that yes, it could but again, it depends on the resources that you have to allocate to everything and, you know, you just have to sit down and do the pros and cons. Do I have somebody – like, if I had high school students to edit things and I’m more than happy to maybe barter some time, like barter some training sessions or something to assist me on it, that might be a good thing – then yeah, I’m going to get this product on and get it out there. But getting it out there and getting people to know about it is a whole other thing, too.

On the other hand, if you’re just a one-man show and maybe you train college players who are way too busy to be trying to do this stuff while they’re trying to keep their scholarships and stuff, then forcing an information product would be tough. I mean, really, it would have to be an individual call by you and the guys that you’re helping to figure out whether or not the information product is the way to go.

I totally see what you mean in terms of building credibility and stuff, but there’s also the opportunity just to give away a whole bunch of free information and so you might just be posting videos online. I think that video is a much more powerful credibility tool than an information product in many aspects, not in every situation, but the feedback that we get from our customer service is that a lot of people are very skeptical until they see the video, so it could be something as simple as dedicating an hour or two to filming YouTube videos per week.

If you want to be known as Central Florida’s #1 strength and conditioning coach for high school football, then maybe you go on YouTube with your videos of you training some of these players and that might be more important than you ever coming up with your own manual to sell at this very instance in time. You know, that might be something you move to in the future. So it’s not a necessary condition, nor is it a sufficient condition, to develop the credibility you need in the eyes of people.

I think if I was… You know, one good game to play is “What would I do if I was in this situation?” I would certainly focus on YouTube videos and other video aspects just because people want to see that stuff. The ability to create and to play videos has never been easier on the internet and so people are just becoming more and more tuned to learning and researching through video. So the video is probably one of the biggest things that I would focus on right now.

Elliott: Man, as you’re saying that, I’m thinking about my business and you’re 100% right and I’ve mentioned it, but just to hear it coming out of someone else’s mouth, it’s almost like just giving credence to what I’ve been doing, but the blog number one – like you said, putting together a WordPress blog – and then how simple it is to just grab a flip cam for about $150 or less, film the workouts and people really enjoy them and then giving tips and whatnot through those channels is just… you’re right… that’s probably the… Since I started doing that, my business has grown so much. I mean, I enjoy writing and I have a certain way of writing that brings my personality across, but it’s not until – like you said, people trust when they see your face and I definitely have to admit…

Craig:
Yeah, and getting those videos on the blog, too. I mean, just copy and paste the video onto your blog so you’re double-dosing there. So that’s very important.

Elliott: Now, some of the coaches listening to this recording are members of my Warehouse Gym Business course, and they’ve heard me talk about building your tribe. This is very similar to your Entourage Marketing System and speaking of videos, I think you cover a lot of that in that system that helped you build close to $1 million in information marketing in your business in 2008, like you say on your website. Can you tell us a little bit about that Entourage Marketing System?

Craig: Yeah, I mean, really, it’s building that community around you. It’s building up superstars in your community so again, if you go and take a look at Joe D’s stuff, he built up Miles Austin in the Miles Austin project. I mean, he’s a real great example. He’s probably not even thinking of doing this stuff.

There’s a lot of people that naturally this comes to as something they do… would be doing anyways, and my friend Dave Ferusha is another good example of just a great charismatic personality and he just wants to share stuff and he has great stories to share. So, you know, go back to Joe D’s stuff. He’s building up these superstars in Miles Austin.
That’s what you’re doing in your entourage. You want to build up superstars in terms of you know, if you’re training high school athletes or even if you’re training women for fat loss. In my niche market, we’re training everyday average people for fat loss and we’re making superstars out of the winners of our transformation contest.

So you want to have some way to recognize and reward everyone and have everybody else who’s new coming into your system want to aspire to achieving this recognition and rewards and these levels that other people are achieving so that they too can attain the pleasure of being recognized and rewarded in front of their peers.
So the whole entourage thing kind of came out of the TV show and if you think about it, it’s like there’s always kind of one person leading the entourage which would be you, and then within the entourage you have everybody else. I mean, if you take a look at the covers of the Entourage DVD, it’s kind of like that V formation of guys.

You have the main guy, and then you have your next superstar clients, and then your next superstar clients and your next superstar clients and you want to have them enjoying the fruits of their efforts and everything that’s possible to them and making them feel special. You think about those guys going to Vegas and being in a VIP area. They’re all VIPS but there’s still always one person in charge of the VIP area and again, that’s you.

So again, you’re building up this powerful community within your entourage is what I call it, and basically through recognition and reward, getting people to buy into the program and you being everywhere through YouTube and all these online medias and also some of the offline stuff, too. But really, it’s just about building, building, building. Always doing stuff every day to make sure people want to join in.

Elliott: It sounds like you’re just serving as many people as you can in a…

Craig:
You’re serving them and you’re helping them as much as possible get towards their goal and the more you can help somebody, the more they’re going to have that word-of-mouth in telling other people about it.

Elliott: All right. It almost sounds like social proof as well.

Craig: Definitely. I mean, absolutely. The more other people can see people as succeeding, the more that they’re going to be believing that you can help them as well and you want success stories from every different demographic. So again, going back to the Central Florida strength and conditioning coach who wants to be known as the best high school football strength coach, I mean, he would want to have guys who are linebackers. He would want to have quarterbacks. He would want to have wide receivers and running backs. He would want to have a success story for every single group so he doesn’t get labeled as “Oh, that guy just works with offensive linemen. He just gets the biggest guys in there and that’s why they’re strong.”

You want to be able to show that you can help the finesse players as well. So you want to have at least one success story for every single demographic – you know, white kids, black kids, Hispanic kids, every position, every demographic as much as possible. The more you have that social proof, the more somebody can go to that site and say, “All right. I’m a 17-year old white kid who’s tall and skinny,” and you know what? They have a 17-year old white kid who’s tall and skinny and he helped them gain 20 pounds and become an All-State player or something. And the more you have those, the easier it’s going to be. That way, you don’t have some kid who shows up on the site and goes, “Oh, there’s nothing but rich white kids going to this thing. I don’t fit in here. He won’t be able to help me.” That’s exactly it.

Elliott:
Or he doesn’t understand me.

Craig: Yeah, absolutely. You’ve got it right.

Elliott: What happens when we’re just starting out and we really don’t have too many testimonials and we really don’t have an entourage? How do we get started with that?

Craig: Well, there’s actually just a simple little system I posted in my newsletter the other week. You just go to these people and you ask them, “Hey, will you do me a favor and just fill out these questions?” And so all the people that you do have, just give them like:

- How did you find us?

- Were you skeptical?

- What were your results?

- Were you surprised by that?

- Who would you recommend us to?

And so just give that to as many people as possible and you’ll build up some testimonials. Now beyond that, you just have to continue… Obviously, putting the work in to get the success stories is another thing.

Online for me personally, the transformation contest was the biggest boost. You know, that might be a little bit more difficult for people who are training high school athletes, but if you’re doing boot camp stuff, you can definitely have some type of contest in your boot camps – you know, an eight-week contest, before and afters, that type of thing – again, the recognition and rewards. People love that type of stuff. They want to be known as the person who lost 15-20 pounds in your boot camp, that sort of thing. And you just make photos a requirement. That way, they’re going to win something, but they’ve got to give you the photos before and after, and let you use those. So that stuff is important.

Obviously creating and building personal relationships, I mean, you could have a contest but if you’re a very cold person or whatever – 99% of trainers aren’t so it’s not really a big deal, but – it’s all about how you approach it. Just make sure that you’re approaching it with a win-win situation for the person. That should be quite easy to do over time with those strategies and again, it does take a little time but it shouldn’t be too hard.

Elliott: Wow. That’s incredible. Everything that you’re saying sounds great. What if I’m brand new to… in other words, I’ve got a great business or I’m building my business. I’ve got a few testimonials. I don’t know anything about the internet but how to check my email. What is the first thing that I’ve got to do to either get these videos or show people my testimonials besides just the pamphlets that I’ve got in my hand or my business cards? How do I just get online?

Craig: Well, you go and find some high school kid to show you everything, really.

Elliott: [Laughs.]

Craig: No, I mean seriously. You go and if you’re a football coach, you should be able to… they should be out there, like a thousand of them you can get help from. I mean, the stuff they learn in high school now is outrageous, how well they’re attuned to computer stuff. Again, you go and barter. You say I’ll train you one free session a week if you do X, Y, and Z for me on the computer. And that’s what you do. Literally. And if you want to learn how to do it, you have the kid teach you. If you don’t want to ever learn how to do it, then you just keep on having the kid do it themselves and you say, “Okay, show me what the results are.”

But the simplest thing… You know, we go back to the video stuff, you don’t need anything but a YouTube – it’s not even a subscription, but you just need to have a sign-in at YouTube. So you go to YouTube and you sign up for an account there and it’s free and everything and that’s all you need to post videos on YouTube. You don’t need a website; you don’t need any new email addresses. You don’t need to pay for anything. You just need the flip cam that plugs into the computer and, I mean, I’m very hesitant to try and learn anything new online but it took me two minutes to figure that out and I’m pretty stupid, so anybody can figure that stuff out to get videos on YouTube.

Once you get them up, there’s a few tricks to getting them seen by more people and we go over that in the entourage stuff but again, any high school kid – any 12-year old kid, Grade 6 kid – could probably do the YouTube stuff for you. So, get your kids doing it or whatever and that will be the first thing to do and then the blog stuff, have somebody sit down with you for half an hour and take you through the very simple thing that is called WordPress and again, if you can figure out email, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to figure out the WordPress stuff and really get up to speed on it and be able to post stuff.

Again, if you don’t want to do that yourself, you can write the information in an email, send it to somebody and they can post it on WordPress and put some pictures in and make it all pretty, and very, very simple. And again, you can barter that or you can find someone on Craigslist to do it for $8 or $10 an hour. Craigslist is just the online thing – you get a high school kid to find the person on Craigslist.

There’s a ton of ways to do things, and especially now with the economy, there’s lots of people looking for some odd jobs and will be happy to help. So there’s a million ways to get stuff on the internet without being on the internet itself.

Elliott: Craig, I have to compliment you on your newsletter. I’ve been getting your offline newsletter for I want to say close to a year now and it is one of my favorites. I love newsletters, by the way, but there are some that I just get super-excited when I know they’re coming in the mail. Like I even told you the other day that the interview you did with Joel Marion this month, I would have paid ten times the amount of the membership in order to get that. I mean, it’s just loaded with content.

So I always like to have mentors in different areas with regard to my business. This question’s a little different. Who were some of your mentors? Where did you learn about the things that you teach people and who do you go to for your information?

Craig:
I guess the three biggest mentors that I have… The first one is this guy, Dan Kennedy, who’s not necessarily an internet guy but more of a what’s called direct marketing – so you know, you send out postcards or newsletters in the mail and try and get people to purchase. Obviously that translates into online stuff as well, but he’s a real anti-online type of guy, but his stuff is the foundation of marketing and direct response and creating personality and copy and just making sure that doing business with you is exciting, not this big lesson.

So Dan Kennedy’s a big one. He has a newsletter that I’m like you. I look forward to his – man, probably as much as any TV show I could possibly ever look forward to. I would put it this way. I look forward to his newsletter like I look forward to – and every guy on this call probably looks forward to – watching Sunday afternoon football. It’s just enjoyable because, like I said, he teaches you how to put personality into your business and that’s what makes me look forward to it because he’s this grumpy old guy and he’s got personality that way, and he talks about what he’s doing and he gives you lessons and stories and it’s perfect and it’s really, really good. So that’s the one I look forward to the most.

Tom Venuto is a guy who had an eBook, or still has an eBook, called “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle,” and he was a business coach of mine for awhile and he really set me up and I owe him a deep debt of gratitude.

And then another guy, I guess, Yanik Silver is another guy who I learn a lot from and I get some personal coaching from him. He’s also really into the putting personality and fun into your business and just making sure that people want to come back and hang out with you.

You know, Jason Ferrugia does this very well. I went down and trained at his place in New Jersey and people go there early and stay late so if their workout’s at 6:00, they show up at 5:00 – 5:30 to hang out with other people that are finishing their programs, and they stay till – you know, they work out from 6:00 to 7:00 and they stay there till 8:00 or 8:30 just hanging out with everybody. So it’s building that personality and community and everything that way, so that’s a good example of what those three guys have helped teach me.

Elliott: Yeah, absolutely. We talk a lot about that. That’s funny that you mention… and I’m assuming it’s a large part of building your entourage and what your entourage marketing system is about.

Craig:
Very much so. I mean, really, really using a million different ways to build a strong following makes people want to do business with you over and over and over again.

Elliott: Absolutely. Well, we spoke about mentors and I’m going to encourage everyone listening to this call – obviously you see the value in educating yourself with regard to business as you are a part of this course. To learn more about the online end of things – because you know I’m talking mostly about your offline marketing: how to build your warehouse gym, get it started and to get people in your city flying towards it – but Craig Ballantyne is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to online marketing and some of the information that he shared with you this evening is just the tip of the iceberg. Like I say. I drool when his newsletter comes because I know I’m going to learn something brand new that I can implement immediately.

And Craig, correct me if I’m wrong. Your onlinefitnessprofits.com, the Entourage Marketing System there, now do we purchase that and then become a member? And we can get your newsletter that way? Or how can people get on your newsletter now?

Craig: Yeah, definitely. You can get on the newsletter by that. You’ll get two free issues with the OnlineSuperProfits – through the OSP Entourage Marketing System. So it’s pretty cool. And then, like you say, you just keep on looking forward to it every month. It’s pretty cool because I basically just show everything that’s working in my business.

Elliott: Yeah, that’s the coolest thing. I think this is part of the Entourage Marketing System also, but it’s like transparency. I was touched when you did that part about your Dad when he passed away. I mean, I felt like I knew him. It was incredible. And you’re always talking about your dog, so it’s funny that the information is in there, but I think Matt Furey has called it – I think I’ve heard him call it, like an infotainment?

Craig: Infotainment, yeah. Yeah.

Elliott:
And it’s definitely entertaining as well. Well, we want to thank you again. We really appreciate your time. I know you’re a busy dude. And I want to let everyone know they can get in touch with Craig from onlinefitnessprofits.com. Hit him up on Twitter. What is it, like Craig Ballantyne Twitter?

Craig: Yeah. Go to TurbulenceTwitter.com or on Facebook at FacebookCraig.com. I bought those two websites that just go directly to the pages where you can find me.

Elliott: Awesome. Friend him up – I’m sure he won’t mind and he’ll definitely hit you up with great information via those resources. All right, everyone, have a great evening and we’ll see you guys in a couple of days for the next course.

Craig, thank you.

Craig: Thank you.

How To Open A Warehouse Gym Part 3

How I Turned My Van Into A Cash Machine (well, kinda.)

24

In part 2 of How To Open A Warehouse Gym you learned of my struggles as a budding entrepreneur, moving from location to location in order to find a home to training my clients. Ultimately, I ended up using my father’s used van as a vehicle for transportation as well as to drive profits into my pockets!

To this day I still drive the old, beat up, dirty, windowless, ugly conversion van that my dad gave me after my car blew up on the way to training some pretentious housewives at a “health club” that I hated.  My friends and family are always asking me, “Elliott, why don’t you get rid of that ugly piece of shit and get yourself a new, respectable car?”

Well, besides the fact that it has less than 75,000 miles on it, drives perfectly and I would rather join the circus as a human cannon ball than enslave myself to a new car payment… it’s got some sentimental value to me.  You see, if it weren’t for my van I may still be a slave to some corporate whore’s every whim and desire.  I would MUCH rather drive my ugly van and be free, than to trade it in and join the ranks of emotional infants who still drool and suckle at the cold, corportate teat.

On the fated day I was approached by one of my favorite clients to start an outdoors “strength training” program for men, I immediately began collecting and filling my van with used equipment and trash for training my camp members with.  Since I didn’t yet have a gym and my “equipment budget” was nonexistent I was forced to be very creative and resourceful when collecting tools for training.

My trusty van and I took a tour of the more obscure, outer limits of St. Petersburg in order to collect used tires, cinder blocks, logs, sandbags, tractor tires, wheel barrels and empty beer kegs from abandoned buildings and junk yards.  I don’t think there had ever been a happier garbage man than I on that 97 degree day in Tampa Bay.  We stopped and collected anything that could be lifted, flipped, pushed, pulled or dragged.

When I got home that evening I begun unloading most of this trash in my narrow driveway.  My wife came home to find me grinning, ear to ear, amongst a pile of garbage in front of our new home.  In her typical way, she simply sighed and shook her head as she navigated around the used tires and bricks carrying the groceries inside.  I must say, she has ALWAYS been supportive of my crazy ideas and always confidant of my ability to provide for our family… even when the mortgage it over due and I’m running around the city sifting through dumpsters.

Within a few short days I was running my very first “Strength Camp” (I first named it “Primal Strength Camp”… but then dropped the ‘Primal’) at a local park.  The class was filled with a few of my male clients along with their brothers, friends and neighbors.  We only met on Saturday’s and I charged $15 per class.  After a few weeks of dragging tires, carrying sandbags and pushing my van a few of the guys appoached me to open my class up durring a few weekdays as well.  I happily accepted their proposal to pay me $99 per month to train their class 3x per week at the park.

The following Tuesday I hauled my van full of hundreds of pounds of trash across town to train my new weekday class.  I pulled up at the park and sat in my van waiting for the gentlemen to show up at our designated time… 6:30 PM.  As the clock neared 6:45 I began to feel like I had been stood up, no one was going to show up for my first offical “Strength Camp” class.  At about 7:00 one of the guys shows up and remains in his car talking on his cell phone for another 7 minutes and then walks over to my van.  He approached me with a warm smile, shoved a $100 bill into my hand and said, “Let’s get started!”

In the back of my mind, I was SO pissed off!  The truth is that I just wanted to hand him back his money and go home to cry in my wife’s lap.  But I didn’t… I trained him “one-on-one” (at a boot camp price) that day and the following day, and for a full month with none of the other guys ever showing up for my Strength Camp class.  At the conclusion of that month, knowing that it was not prudent for me to continue training him he suggested that we discontinue the class… it was at this moment that I had to make a BIG decision.  I could simply chalk this up as a failed experiment, or I could MAKE it work.

I also knew that if I did MAKE it work, that there was only one way to guarantee it would!

How To Open A Warehouse Gym Part 2

step-upsIn part 1 of How To Open A Warehouse Gym you learned of my struggles as a student of fitness, a personal trainer and an employee of a mega-sized “Health Club” where most worthy trainers are treated like cogs in the big malfunctioning machine of the fake fitness facade.

After my departure from the marauding mess called “Lifestyle’s Family Fitness”… with zero clients, a new mortgage, over $10,00o in debt, my wife and 2 year old daughter… I was broke, lost and confused about how I was to go about getting paid to do what I loved most — Training Athletes.

What made matters worse, was that on my last day at the “health club” the only asset that I had to my name — my 1989 Lincoln Towncar, BLEW UP!  Fortunately my father had sitting in his driveway the 1987 Econoline Ford Family Van that he used to lug me and my 3 brothers and sisters around Long Island several years back.  He had no intentions of ever using it again and with only 70,000 miles on it he knew that no one would ever pay for what it was still worth.   Little did either of us know that it would come to be worth over $300,000 to me over the next 4 years.

With the look of pride that only a father could have for his rebellious son… my dad handed me the keys to the only car that he had ever paid full price for, the old-school family van.  With a heart broken, my seedling family and an old van I begun my first real journey into entrepreneurship.

My first plan of advancement was to find a local family owned gym where I could start to rebuild my personal training clientele.  The first place I trained was in a Yoga studio, but that quickly ended since “Yogi’s” are typically passive and quite people (who also lack meat in their diets) and it seemed I was just too loud and rambunctious of a carnivore to share space with them.  So, I was *shushed* the hell out of there in less than a  month.

Next, I took my small personal training business to a local chiropractor’s clinic.  This worked out quite well for about 7 months until one day I showed up at the office and the doors were bolted shut!  It turned out that Dr. Crackmyback had not been paying HIS rent and had us ALL kicked out.  I should have taken notice when the landlord threw a FOR SALE sign up on the front door… I guess I was too focused on correcting my clients form to see anything else.

Finally, I found a gym in downtown St. Pete owned by a female bodybuilder with an attitude worse than mine.  The gym didn’t have many members and she liked it that way… most people seemed to piss her off.  I sheepishly approached her one day and proposed to pay her $500 per month to train all of my clients at her gym.  Surprisingly, she accepted my offer and turned her back to me and continued her 1000 rep dumb bell lateral raise routine.

It was at this small, barely surviving, half bodybuilding – half “cocaine station” gym that I had begun to get my “feet under me” and achieve some level of stability.  The owner (lets call her “Cara”) was polite enough to me and my clients and seem to accommodate most of my needs.  She and I both had strong personalities (and lots of testosterone) so for the most part we would aim to avoid each other.   I kept my mouth shut and went home when I wasn’t training and she put her iPod on to avoid any useless conversation.

workout
For about 2 years my personal training business grew from earning me about $2,000 per month to just over $10,000.   It was at this time that one of my male clients asked me, “Elliott, you have such an amazing athletic background… why aren’t you training athletes?”  This question stuck me like a dagger to my heart, the truth was that I wasn’t training athletes because I knew it would piss “Cara” off if I had a bunch of teenagers in here throwing around medicine balls… I was stifling my DREAM so as to not piss someone else off!!!  This is the most insidious reason why most people never succeed, and I understood that this was exactly what I was doing.

With the idea of my dream rekindled, a semi-sustainable personal training business, and my 1987 Econoline Van I ventrued outdoors to begin my new business which I called “Strength Camp”.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 3 where you’ll learn exactly how I turned my van into a cash machine on wheels and finally gave myself the chance to do exactly what I loved to do…. and get paid very well for it.

Warehouse Gym Business Interrogations

“Elliott, Tell Me…. How Exactly Do I Open My Own Warehouse Gym”

p1010072

Since the release of my new “Warehouse Gym Business Plan” last week, I have been flooded with questions from personal trainers and coaches who want to know exactly how I went about opening my warehouse gym.  I just wanted to let you know that I really have enjoyed reading them and I intend to answer all of your questions.

But, I have to warn you…

The truth is that I am NOT a business or marketing expert… in fact, I kinda suck at that stuff.  My only admission is that I am a good “CopyCat” — I have read, studied and mimicked what other succesful gym owners have done and added my own spin on it.

You may think that I am somewhat “successful” as a business owner or somthing — but I started out as just a regular run-of-the-mill personal trainer who was sick of getting ripped off by the mega-sized Health Clubs in my city.

Today, I am literally living the life I have always dreamed off… father to beautiful children, working in my own business and a HOT wife ;)

The reason why I created The Warehouse Gym Business Plan is simply because no one else has… I figured that I would leave all of the personal trainer business and marketing stuff to the experts.  But it just seems like they have only been focusing on teaching trainers how to run those Jumping Jack and Jogging “Boot Camps”.  Nothing has been offered for folks like us who wanna own a Warehouse Gym and train people we really enjoy surrounding ourselves with.

Well any way, like I said it has been my intention to answer all of your questions but since it would take me too long to get back to you I had chosen to do a few select interviews and recorded them for your listening pleasure!
