Motivation vs. Discipline

I awake at 4 AM most mornings of the week.

I do this because of a commitment I’ve made to myself… to meditate daily.

With all of the responsibilities of being a father, husband, business owner Pro Strongman… 4 AM is the only time I have throughout the day to meditate.

There are mornings that I don’t FEEL like getting up… but I still do.

Does this mean that I am highly motivated?

Or is there another secret that allows me to spring out of bed when most people are still drooling on their pillows?

Discover my secret for DOING THE RIGHT THING… whether I feel like it – or not.

    right on bro.

I think this topic and doing all these things become a way of life, especially once you are married, have kids, run a biz, etc.

Motivation, like you said, has NOTHING 2 do w/it. It’s the dedication and commitment it requires to actually do the things that get results.

It’s either 100% or not at all.

No dedication = shit results all across the board.

    How right you are bruddah!

Excellent video clip, Elliott. It’s so true. Discipline is one of the many things that separates us from the rest. Sometimes we may not want to, but we have to! That’s our mindset.

Fyi…here’s an article I wrote on this very topic.

    Enjoy!

Good shyt brother, just wrote a newsletter on Discipline & Commitment which you’ll see tomorrow on twitter.

Lots of people “know” this stuff or they “say” they know it, living/doing what you “know” is the TRUTH behind if you “ARE” it!!!

talk is cheap, make it happen I say.

Elliot, I agree with you 100% and am inspired by the commitment you make to bring quality and inspiring material to us regularly!! As a sales organization committed to peak performance, very similar to your philosophy, we have realized that once you get the momentum going it is easier to stay passionate for your commitment. It is those early steps that are so difficult, as we know most people break their diet within the first 3 weeks. We talk to people about taking on the responsibility to deliberately INSPIRE others!! it is very easy to let yourself down, but much more difficult to let down others!! by accepting the responsibility to inspire others, your wife, kids, best friend struggling with lack of motivation, discipline etc you have to get up at 4 or 5am and get after it!! you have a responsibility to something bigger then just yourself!!!

the first step to achieving peak performance is our definition for success–inspiring others to accomplish more then they ever thought possible!!

thanks again, your commitment is inspiring US to become the most dominant orthopedic sales organization in the world!!!

The cool thing about all the things Elliott and you guys are saying is that man has to decide between nothing and success. Simply speaking: you are either disciplined to reach your goals or you suck at being a nothing! I love living life the way I do it now. I weighed in over 130kg FAT 4 years ago, got tired of biceps curls, of counting calories and doing what others tell you to do. People like Zach, Elliott, Mike, Nick Nilsson and Smitty are the men who’s protocols I embraced. I have bought something from all of you, have eaten it right off the screen and every time I hit the mountains or I punish some iron in the local gym, people stare, but when I look at them I see the faces of you guys that have motivated me to DISCIPLINE MYSELF AND kick-ass every time I hit the iron. When I have a bigger place, have made a success of earning my own underground den then I am going to push this thing deeper into my guts and start a helluva shrine in my neighbourhood. Hey! I train like a beast (Zach) I do my walk-abouts like a gladiator, I try everything Smitty pushes out with AMD, I’ve been following The Hybridmuscle system of Elliott and Mike… all because I believe in each one of you, have learnt from all of you and I am having a ball of a time kicking my own ass around!!!!! Thanks!

The One thing I see that is a absolute virus is this prevailing sense of wanting all the benefits for the least amount of effort. Maybe its a part of the human condition that all of us have to overcome, Im not sure, but I see more teens that want it all and they want it now and they’re just about willing to do anything to get it. I know one thing I see this with especially teen athletes, they’re didicated (motivated) to finding the quickest fix possible. Which leads to all kinds of failures. I think this virus has its roots in the lack of mental toughness. I see many teen athletes that cannot decide in their mind to work through the pain whether its physical or mental pain. There is a weak mindedness especially in young men that is rampent through our society. Anyway, just thinking outloud here to an interesting topic….I could talk on this all day. Thanks Elliot for all you do, bro!

  15. Thanks, I have been coaching for 23 years and my Father coached for 35 before me we have grown weary of hearing people think that the motivation fairy will come if you sit and wait on it, what a load of crap. Just get up and do it!!

  16. I am in total agreement. I think our society lacks discipline, commitment, integrity and spirituality and thats why we are in the shape we are in today as a nation. “”people dont lack strength, they lack will”, everyone can have the motivation to accomplish a goal but its the discipline that means success or failure.
