I have a confession to make…

I am pathologically addicted to lifting heavy things.

Unless I am lifting heavy, I feel like my workouts are a
complete waste.

Is lifting heavy absolutely necessary for building muscle?

Probably not.

But just like most addictions, mine is completely irrational.
The facts and figures about lifting heavy things are of no
interest to me.

All I care about is how GOOD IT FEELS to challenge and
defeat the pull of gravity as I grind a 500 pound barbell off
of the ground.

Correct me or call me names if you’d like.

But this is just who am! **sniff, sniff**

So, what does a guy who loves lifting heavy do when he
wants to look more like a bodybuilder than a powerlifter?

Besides cutting back on the Oreo Cookies and cotton candy…

…he does POWER-BUILDING workouts.

This is exactly what you’ve seen me doing in my most recent
YouTube training videos.

Here is how it works.

First, I follow the same strength building parameters that I’ve
laid out in my Grow Stronger Method book for the first
exercise in the workout.

This means that if I choose dead lifts, I will either go 3×3, 5×2,
6×1, etc.

After I get my fix of heavy liftin’, I’ll move onto a few other
compound exercises that support the first one.

With these exercises I follow a more “bodybuilding” parameter,
such as 4 x 8 or 3 x 10. This means I’m using a lighter weight
but I’m keeping the volume a bit higher.

I might also include a drop set or some negatives here too.

I’d like to say that I rest for shorter intervals between these sets,
but the fact is that I just sit around until I feel strong enough to
do the next set.

Its been my experience that by following this type of “hybrid”
approach to strength and muscle building you’re muscles grow
stronger and larger within the same phase.

I’m not the only one who thinks this is a great approach for
building stronger, harder, better looking muscles…

…guys like Johnnie Jackson and Ronnie Colman have been
known to lift like this all year round.
